![]() Rafael Augusto Bordalo Pinheiro is one of the most famous and successful Portuguese ceramists in history. Born in Lisbon into a family of distinguished artists, he received his first lessons in drawing and modeling in his father's studio. In 1883, his brother persuaded Rafael to lend his artistic talent to a ceramics factory in Caldas da Rainha, he invested in. Rafael immediately plunged into modeling in clay. A very rare example of his earliest work is shown in Plate VIII. He assumed the artistic direction with such vigor that the factory achieved high-quality production almost from the start. The company exhibited at the Portugal Com- mercial Exhibition in Lisbon in 1885. Pinheiro’s style is original, although inspired by Ma- nueline- and Palissy-type ceramics. He managed to combine exquisite elegance with the need to pro- duce ergonomic, everyday use ceramic pieces. |
